Web Marketing in Emerging Markets

All internet marketers and businesses using the internet to market their companies, services or products are constantly looking for potentially new clients. One of the easiest Geographical areas to target and a highly profitable on at that, is Southern Africa.

To be effective a few factors should be considered which is essential to be effective and very profitable.

Firstly you must keep in mind that most of Southern Africa is highly educated, affluent and internet literate. Access to the internet is more than adequate, though most private users use normal dialup connections and are relatively slow.

One concern is the multitude of languages, but keep to English, the only other European language for only 2 countries in Southern Africa is Portuguese.

Do not worry about payment gateways on your website. Credit cards in use are mostly Mastercard and Visa. American Express and Diners Club are also used extensively but not as much as the first two mentioned. The Internet banking system is also very well developed.

The only things to consider are that the decimal system is used and some internet connections are quite slow. Let us discuss these 2 a bit.

When product specifications are provided in the Imperial system, supply a version in the decimal system as well. If product drawings are provided, also have a downloadable pdf file available.

Many internet users still rely on slow but very effective dialup internet connections. If you really want to fail all marketing efforts in Southern Africa, then use a slow loading web site. Try and avoid Flash as far as possible and avoid table based designs. Rather have an imageless web site with a separate gallery. Users anticipate longer load times in photo galleries, and will not leave your web site.

By applying a few basic rules and considering the Southern African environment, marketing can be very profitable.

Happy Marketing
